How many half marathons have you run, including how many Bentwood Half Marathons?

2010 was my one and only previous Brentwood half marathon. It was my second half marathon as I had only recently started running, in my early forties. I’ve since run over 40 half marathons (several as official pacer) and over 60 marathons and ultramarathons in the UK and abroad.

Why are you a runner?

I became a runner to get fit, then I fell in love with it. It gives fitness, a huge sense of well-being and a space to escape to help me deal with the complications of a busy life. It’s also introduced me to so many incredible people who never cease to be a positive influence and a huge inspiration to me and to one another.

What running moment are you most proud of?

Completing my first nonstop 100 mile ultramarathon; Chester 100 May 2018. I learned so much about myself during the incredible highs and lows of that day and night. I also raised £10,000 for Cancer Research UK, a charity I chose because the research and support they offer and because of those very close to me who have succumbed to cancer in recent years.

How do you stay motivated to keep running?

There are always new challenges to take on, the variety is almost endless. Often the going is tough, but the rewards when they come are huge and with races it’s remembering what that feeling of euphoria is like when the hard work is done and the medal is hanging around my neck. Others keep me motivated too. We all have ups and downs in our running and so often it’s the support and inspiration found in the running community that picks me up when I start to falter.

What are your tips for race day?

Remind yourself that the hard work is done. The race is your reward for the efforts you’ve put in through your training. Be well hydrated and relaxed. If you have pre-race nerves channel them into positive energy as you cross that start line. Relax into your rhythm and remember this race is all about you. Don’t go out too fast because others around you are. Focus on you. Marvel in what you’re doing but stay in control. Emotions can fuel you along with that positive energy, but they can be your downfall too, so no matter how tough things get just remind yourself why you’re doing this, how you’re doing this and that you will do this. Remember this; we are not what happens to us, we are what we choose to become.
